Family Funday

Lovely day at the annual summer fun day event. Members of the youth section, senior players and families from the local community turned up to enjoy a day in the sun. Organised by Paula and Donna this year, activities included rounders, rugby ,football and a water fight. The bar was open, the BBQ was on and the sun was out. An excellent opportunity to get together and catch up.

Youth section awards

Slough Rugby Club’s Youth section gathered to celebrate the achievements of its members at an awards ceremony on Sunday.

Presenting the awards were Youth Chairman Martin Tilby and Club President Ray Gagnon.

All players from U7s to U14s received a memento award. There were then three larger trophies awarded in each age group - Most improved Player, Coach’s Player and Player of the Season - before the annual section wide trophies were presented. The John Spandley Award for Perseverance went to U12s player Sam Woolnough. U9s player Ashleigh Mulvihill-Wheeler picked up the TREDS Player of the Season award and Malachi Makawa from the U10s won the Slough RFC Junior Player of the Year title.

Volunteers’ efforts also received recognition at the ceremony with U8s coach Greg Fountain named as Coach of the Year and Paula Hammond, Donna Austin, Sandie Belcher and Christina Fountain receiving flowers for keeping the club's youngsters fed and watered throughout the season. Paula Hammond also collected the Colin Williams Cup for efforts above and beyond while the Austin family picked up the Neville Cup and Leeann Biggs was awarded The Vase.

Club President Ray Gagnon said that it was a privilege to be asked to present the awards. ‘I was very pleased to see so many Juniors and parents attending. It was well organised and a pleasure to see the amount of volunteers from the parents who actually have an input into the Junior section. It was also good to see such a mixture of male and female Junior players. Well done to all the volunteers.’

Super Saturday

Slough RFC U7-13s swapped their usual Sunday training session for a Saturday session as part of Super Saturday 2022.

The day began with a kicking masterclass led by 1st XV coach Brad Pennington where the club’s youth section enjoyed learning how to grubber, punt, drop-kick and place-kick under Brad’s direction.

The teams then had a regular training session with their coaches on the main pitch before forming a guard of honour to cheer the 1st XV on to the pitch for their match v Bletchley. The sun was out and a good number of youth players and parents stayed on to watch Slough win the game, a great finish to the club rugby of the day, the club then remaining open to show the 6 Nations Super Saturday games.

Wynford Phillips festival

Over 700 boys and girls joined Slough Rugby Club for a celebration of KIDS FIRST Rugby at the annual Wynford Phillips Festival 2022.

Slough U10s had a great day. Leo and Jigar opened the scoring against Rams in their first game while Eshen and Remmi gave Slough an early lead against Pinner in the second, Malachi scoring after half time for a Slough win. Ealing White proved to be challenging opponents next, Shayen scoring in this game while the game against Windsor saw Arjan added to the scoresheet. The young Greenies final match was against Ealing Greens, Hasan adding to the tally to finish the day.

Slough U9s made excellent progress throughout the day. James, Hamza and Freddie scored against Windsor Red in the first match; Omar added to the tally against Farnborough in the next and some great mazy runs took Evan over the whitewash against two Ealing teams. Powerful runs for Ruby and Savanna saw tries against Windsor Black while great teamwork and support play led to more tries for the team in games against Marlow Wildcats and Phoenix.

Slough U8s had a great day of Tag Rugby with teams from Basingstoke, Ealing, Farnborough, Pinner and Rams.

Slough U12s combined with Hillingdon Abbots for the day to gain some valuable match experience.

Youth Chairman, Martin Tilby, said the day had been extremely successful -

“After last year’s cancellation due to Covid it was wonderful to welcome so many young players back to Tamblyn Fields. It was a great day of youth rugby played in good spirits with Rugby’s Core Values of Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship at the forefront which is what rugby at Slough RFC is all about. A big thank you to our small army of volunteers who made the event happen.”

KIDS FIRST Litter pick

Great job by our KIDS FIRST section who had a litter pick around the grounds with the Slough Anti-Litter Society after training this morning.

Over 31 bags of rubbish plus doors, cones and other larger items were collected from around the club and local area. Everyone enjoyed the litter pick and participating children received a certificate.

Well done to everyone involved and thank you to Paula for organising.
