Picnic in the Park

The club held its first Picnic in the Park event yesterday, a low-key 'fun-in-the-park' kind of event with games of rounders and football and a small number of stalls, eg. face-painting, Pimms, tombola, to keep attendees entertained as they relaxed in the sun.

Slough Representation at County 2017/18

Slough had 5 players selected for the original County squad but both scrum half Tom Young and centre and club captain Max Miles had to withdraw through injuries sustained in the last couple of games of the season.

Of the remaining three Ben Foster and Craig Fullicks made the squad for Buckinghamshire's game against Oxfordshire, with Ben Foster scoring a try in Bucks 77-28 defeat and Craig coming off the bench in the 65th minute.

Ben Ambrose was added to the County squad for the Essex game. All three started on the bench but came on as impact players from 60th minute but couldn't prevent Bucks slipping to a 21-15 defeat.

M&J Awards 2017/18

Slough Rugby Club’s youth section gathered to celebrate the achievements of its members at the annual awards ceremony on Sunday.

Minis and Juniors Chairman, Andrew Leighton- Pope, presided over the ceremony for what will be his final time as he is standing down after 12 years in the role.

All players from U7s to U17s received a medal. There were then three trophies awarded in each age group - Most improved Player, Coach’s Player and Player of the Season - before the overall Minis Player of the Season and Juniors Player of the Season trophies were presented. The Minis Player of the Season trophy, for age groups U7-12s, went to U11s player Charlie Spires, whilst U17s Robert Vater picked up the Junior U13-17s Player of the Season award.

Volunteers also received recognition at the ceremony with U15s coach Barry Dillon hailed as the Coach of the Year. Helen O’Hara collected the Colin Williams Cup after a season that saw her assist or cover most Minis age groups at some point. The Neville Trophy was awarded to the Young family for their unstinting support for the whole club over the years.

A spokesperson for the club acknowledged that it had been a challenging season for many age groups but thought the future looked bright with improving links within the local community and a number of new players in the lower age groups.

U8s attend London Irish St Patricks Day Festival

Slough RFC U8s attended the annual London Irish St Patricks Day festival at the weekend where the emphasis was very much on Rugby’s Core Values of Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship. The U8s had a great time in their first festival event where they played 5 games before heading to the Madejski Stadium to watch London Irish v Gloucester.

Slough made a promising start to the festival with an early try for Caleb against Oakmedians in the first match. Oakmedians quickly replied with two of their own before Jayden crossed the line to equalise. Some good tagging and defence from both sides saw the two teams edge to and fro before another score each in the final moments ended the game 3-3.

Up against Tadley next the young Greenies played well with some mazy runs and good hands, Hayden and Jad crossing the whitewash in another close finish, whilst a brace for Caleb finished the third game a draw against Aldershot.

Portsmouth proved to be the stronger team in the fourth match, taking charge from the off and running in 4 tries to Slough’s 1 however the team rallied well from the disappointment and put in a good shift for their final match of the day with Ali adding to the score-sheet in a narrow 4-3 loss against Oakmedians.

MacMillan Coffee Morning 2017

Slough Rugby Club took part in world's biggest coffee morning 2017 to raise money and show support for the wonderful team at Macmillan cancer support. In a change to last year's event which took place over three days, this year's efforts were focused on one day with approx. 100 M&J parents, senior players, club supporters and committee members turning up to drink coffee, eat cake and raise funds.

The event was a great success with a combination of cakes, coffee, raffle, sweepstake, spin-the-wheel game and bric-a-brac stall raising a total of £565 while a 'bake-off' saw fierce competition from members with past-president Mike Wild's chocolate cake the winner and bar manager Chris Winter's banana cake second.

A huge thank you and well done to Louisa Caldwell for organising and a big thank you to everyone that came along to support.
