U9s Harlequins Festival
By Kids First
Slough U9s attended the Harlequins U9s Festival yesterday
In a change to the usual festival format of several short games, the Quins festival saw teams playing 3 games of 20 minutes each.
Up against Winchester first, Slough were straight out of the blocks with quick footwork seeing Harvey over the line to open the scoring. Winchester immediately replied with one of their own before a brilliant game unfolded with both teams stringing together several phases and some fantastic rugby and teamwork on display. Unfortunately despite Slough’s best efforts and a try for Caleb in the 2nd half, the game finished with a loss for the young Greenies.
Slough had another game immediately afterwards so no time to regroup as they kicked off against Guildfordians. The game looked to start in the same way as the last however the try was in touch and the turnover saw a quick footed Guildford player exploit a gap in Slough’s defence to belt it down the pitch for an Ashton splash. This was quickly followed by another. Some great teamwork, which saw the ball make its way through most of the team, helped to put Harvey over the line to score before 2 more for the opposition finished the first half. Harvey opened the second half with a magnificent run which finished in a try however again, despite Slough’s best efforts the game ended in a loss.
A long break before the third and final game against Old Cats led to a complete loss of concentration and although there was some good individual play, the team were easily distracted and the earlier coordination and focus wasn’t really there.
Overall, a cracking morning of rugby for Slough U9s. Some fantastic individual performances and growth, great teamwork and the chance to play with and against clubs previously unknown. Well done to them all.
Thank you to the Harlequins community team for inviting us to attend and to Staines RFC for hosting.
