U9s Twickenham Festival
By Kids First
Slough U9s had an enjoyable day playing some pretty big teams at the annual Twickenham Festival.
Up against Harlequins first, Slough were straight out of the blocks with an immediate try. Quins replied with one of their own before some great play between Harvey and Caleb led to another Slough score.
A run the length of the pitch for Caleb looked promising however ended with a push into touch on the try-line, a quick footed Quins player taking the turnover ball and legging it the other way to equalise.
Caleb returned for another attempt, this time successfully crossing the whitewash before two tries in quick succession for Quins and a try for Harvey saw the teams back on level pegging again, the game finishing in a draw.
A touring Ipswich team took the lead early in the next game. There was some good attacking play from Slough which took them to the line several times but they were unable to make it over and despite Slough’s best efforts, Ipswich were able to keep their lead until the end.
Up against Teddington next, a to and fro of scores kept the teams at level pegging until Teddington nudged the lead at half time. There was some fantastic teamwork from Slough in the second half, great offloads seeing the ball pass through everyone’s hands for a well worked try and some great running taking Sky over to score.
Playing hosts Twickenham, Sky made a fantastic run down the pitch but was pushed into touch, the turnover ball leading to a try for the opposition. Caleb quickly equalised for Slough. Some great runs from Ali and Hector took the ball to the line where the team worked well together to try and score but unfortunately the Twickenham defence proved too strong.
The final game was against Chiswick who were in fine form scoring from the off. Harvey quickly levelled the score. Good teamwork saw Slough take the ball to the line several times but they were unable to carry it over until a try for Caleb on the final whistle finished the game.
Overall a really good show from our small but mighty U9s team against some very big teams (both in numbers and in size!) Growing confidence and understanding of the game saw moments of U9s brilliance and lots of progress made, both as a team and as individuals. An enjoyable day and a fabulous finish to the season. Well done everyone.
Squad on the day: Ali, Caleb, Cody, Haidar, Harvey, Hayden, Hector, Jay, Sky.
